My Own Pets - Past and Present

Janis

I grew up with a very lovely cat called Janis who taught me a lot about how we should treat and respect our pets! Janis was the most intelligent cat I have ever met and she made sure you knew she was in charge. We always said she would have fit in well in ancient Egypt back when they worshiped cats! She was a black and white Tuxedo cat and the smallest little thing you have ever seen! She lived to the grand old age of 20 and was a super great friend to me growing up.

Mansell

We now have a family cat called Mansell who is a rescue. He is part ragdoll and so a little bit dopey but we love him to bits and hes the gentlest cat ive ever met! I often go back to my parents house to visit and hes generally happy to see me now hes gotten over me "abandoning" him when I moved out of the family home.

Hamsters and Budgie- Luka, Alexis, Lily , James and Blue

Over the years I have owned several hamsters - the first being Luka, who was just the most amazing hamster in the world and could actually dismantle the parts of her own cage in the dark! She lived till 3 and half which is almost unheard of as well. Since then ive had two more girls, first Alexis who was a rescue animal from the RSPCA who was so scared of everything she would walk back into her cage if you put her on the floor, and then Lily who I bought from a pet shop.

Lily was my first pet that i got in my new home with my boyfriend Alex so she was our first shared pet meaning she was super important to us.She was a ball of fluff and enjoyed very much to make a right mess of her cage and throw bedding everywhere possible. She liked to run in her wheel a whole lot too and would often get out and then back in again to run the opposite direction!

Halfway through her life we ended up with our budgie Blue, who is a rescue who was found lost out in a field of all places. Nobody claimed him so we took him in from the vets, hes clearly had a troubled past and even over a year on hes still spooked by things. Not long after we got Blue, the worlds noisiest budgie, we ended up rescuing another animal.

In short we found an eBay listing for a hamster cage, which when you read the listing included a female hamster and all accessories. I messaged the seller and asked them to please re home the hamster to a rescue organisation and to sell the cage and accessories without the hamster if they wanted to make cash off of it. They ignored me so i emailed again explaining what can happen to animals sold cheap online. No response. So then I watched the listing tick down and with 30 seconds to go i bid on the listing and won. I paid £1 for a cage with a hamster inside, which is just ridiculous. Me and my brother went to a super dodgy looking neighborhood about an hours drive from my house the next evening in the dark to pick her up. When we got there the state the hamster was being kept in was awful and the children who owned it were literally throwing the animal around and holding it dangling in the air.

Turns out she was a he and was literally about 4 months old. They had only had him a month and got fed up of it. I t0ok the hamster and two cages home. We were told his name was "the boss" by the old owner but we referred to him as "tiny hamster" as he was super small for a Syrian hamster. I planned to pass him to a rescue i had already contacted a few days later. Well suffice to say he never left my home again. This tiny hamster was just too damn cute and reminded me way too much of Luka. So we kept him and renamed him James, because we already had Lily and she was named after Harry Potter's mum so of course this little guy was named after his dad.

Sadly we ended up saying goodbye to Lily a few months later, but we still have James and Blue, my two gorgeous boys. James is now nearly 2 and Blue is around 2 and half. We hope James can make it to outlive Luka maybe! Blue has a while to go yet as budgies can live a long time!
